Monessen High could be losing the winningest boys'' basketball coach in the school's history?

Joe Salvino, who's won 368 games in 16 years with the Greyhounds including two PIAA Class A titles and three WPIAL Class A championships, is one of the finalists for the vacant Thomas Jefferson post.

Although TJ has never been considered a basketball power like Monessen, it would be a step up for Salvino because the Jaguars play in Class AAA.

TJ's section rivals are Elizabeth Forward, East Allegheny, Keystone Oaks, McGuffey, South Allegheny, South Park and Steel Valley.

The Greyhounds are coming off back-to-back WPIAL titles and went 25-6 the past season, which ended with a 69-64 loss to four-time defending state champion Kennedy Catholic in the Western Region final at Duquesne University's A.J. Palumbo Center.

TJ thought it had a successor for Tom Sharkey last month but 25-year-old Ben O'Connor changed his mind less than 24 hours after being named and decided to stay at Keystone Oaks.

  • It's official. The WPIAL moved Our Lady of Sacred Heart's boys back into Class A's Sec. 3 in basketball with Monessen, Frazier, Clairton, Cornell and Trinity Christian Academy to replace Wilson Christian Academy.

Wilson Christian Academy's girls, meanwhile, were taken out of Class A's Sec. 3 which will consist of Monessen, Clairton, Duquesne, Ellis School, Trinity Christian Academy and Winchester Thurston.

Wilson Christian Academy and Cheswick Christian Academy decided not to play in the WPIAL after being accepted as new members.

  • In case you're wondering, Monessen's Michael Moorer is fourth in the North American Boxing Federation heavyweight rankings.

The boxers ahead of him are Jameel McCline, Monte Barrett and Clifford Ettiene with David Tua listed as champion and Lennox Lewis world champion.

Moorer isn't ranked by the other three best-known organizations - IBF, WBA or WBC.

  • California University's senior pitcher-outfielder Ryan Balan, the North Atlantic Region Position Player of the Year, had to settle for second-team NCAA Division II All-American outfielder.

Carson-Newman senior outfielder Heath Mason, who hit .402 with 20 home runs and 80 RBI, was named the NCAA Division II Position Player of the Year. Mason was invited to participate in the home run challenge at the Division I College World Series in Omaha.

Kutztown junior Glenn Woolard was selected the NCAA Division II Pitcher of the Year. Woolard shows a 14-2 record with two saves, a 2.62 ERA and has struck out 148 in 106 innings.

Kutztown (36-23) plays Columbus State (44-15) this afternoon in the NCAA Division II championships at Montgomery, Ala., with the loser being eliminated.

Besides Woolard, the only other PSAC player to make first team All-American was junior designated hitter Jason Manwaring, who hit a conference-record 23 home runs and drove in 79 runs in 54 games.

  • And thanks to Shirley Halkias of Monessen who says two marks of a holy person are giving and forgiving!
