Longtime Lernerville driver branches out into new car, tracks
There is an adage in racing that says how fast one wants to go depends on how much money one has to spend.
That axiom could be applied to Greg Beach, one of Lernerville Speedway’s most consistent Sportsman Stock drivers of the past decade, who is piloting a Modified in an effort to branch out to new tracks.
“I’m mostly trying to accomplish what will accommodate my wallet,” said Beach, of Chicora. “It’s a steel block motor that I ran in my Late Model. It’s a big motor, but just not what it takes to run in the Steel Block Late Model. That’s the only reason.
“I also wanted to do a bit more traveling around to hit some different tracks. Going somewhere different, I think, will make me better in the long run as opposed to running the same tracks every week.”
Last month, Beach was on the roster for the Renegades of Dirt race at Lernerville.
He encountered some problems in the feature and was scored 18th. He’s also raced at Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex in the E-Mod.
This weekend, the Renegades of Dirt have a two-day show at the Ohio River Shootout at Hilltop Speedway in Millersburg, Ohio.
“This is the first year for me, so it’s probably the 13th race in this (division) for me,” Beach said. “I like it. Right now, it’s getting used to the car and trying to get the car figured out.
“One night, I’ll be in the top five and another night, I won’t be so good. I’ve just been up and down. We went to Hilltop over in Ohio, and I really liked that. It was a nice little track.”
Beach had the Stock figured out at Lernerville and recorded 13 victories in a competitive division. Now he has to take the little Late Model experience he has, along with the successful Stock run, and put that into a new car.
“This is more comparable to a Late Model, I would say,” Beach said. “You can’t take much from the Stock. Chassis-wise it is very similar to a Late Model, with a little Stock thrown in there.
“You have to get used to the smaller tires and the bigger engine. It really is a different car. They feel much different.”
Beach, who started racing a car in 1998, will rely on the experience he has gained through the years.
“Actually, for the tire they have, it is surprising the amount of bite that the car has,” Beach said. “As for the suspension, there is a lot you can work with to make the little tires work.”
Beach was racing the Modified with his good friend Jason Fosnaught, another of Lernerville’s top Stock drivers who moved out of the division.
But Fosnaught’s Modified lost an engine a few weeks ago, and his season most likely is finished.
Which leads back to Beach and his aspirations as to what division he wants to race.
“At this point, what I can race and have the best equipment that I can afford is what I will race,” Beach said. “I can’t say exactly what kind of car that will be, but I won’t do something crazy.”
