Wisconsin firm recalls Canadian beef

Nearly a ton of Canadian beef from three Ontario cows has been recalled by a Wisconsin meat packaging company because of mad cow fears.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said Green Bay Dressed Beef was notified by Canadian officials an audit revealed errors in documents shipped with the animals.

The products subject to the Class II recall are from a cow that is approximately one month older than the 30-month age limit. The two other cows were old enough, but were processed alongside it. Both live and post-mortem inspection for bovine spongiform encephalitis, or mad-cow disease, were done on the cow, and FSIS personnel determined the animal to be healthy and fit for human food. But cows older than 30 months are considered a greater risk for the brain-destroying disease than younger animals.

Each box bears the establishment number "410" inside the USDA seal of inspection. The products were produced on Aug. 4, and were distributed to wholesale distributors in Pennsylvania, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Consumers with questions about the recall may contact Sally VandeHei, FSIS Executive Assistant at 1-877-894-3927.
