A North Side woman who was rescued by Pittsburgh firefighters and two other members of her family remained hospitalized Friday with injuries suffered in a two-alarm fire at their home. Ethel Malone, 43, who had to be revived by firefighters and paramedics after she was pulled from the house in the 1400 block of James Street, was taken to The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Bloomfield in critical condition. Her family asked that no other information be released about her, hospital officials said. Malone's husband, Jack, who also was rescued from the flames, was being treated at the same hospital. The couple's son, Jack Malone Jr., was in fair condition in Mercy Hospital, Uptown. Officials did not release the ages of the two men. City fire Capt. Ken Ruckel was released from Allegheny General Hospital, North Side, where he was treated for burns to the right arm, hospital officials said. A neighbor spotted the flames shortly after 7 a.m. Melvin McMillan, 35, said his wife called 911 after she saw flames shooting from the front first-floor windows of the house and heard the cries of Jack Malone. McMillan said the home was occupied by Malone, his wife and their two children. The first firefighters on the scene saw Jack Malone Jr., who told them his mother was trapped inside the home. The second child apparently was on the way to school at the time, firefighters said. Firefighters found Ethel Malone in a rear bedroom on the second floor and pulled her out through a window of the two-story structure. Ethel and Jack Malone were first taken to Allegheny General Hospital and then flown to West Penn's burn center. Cause of the fire remains under investigation. Damage was estimated at $30,000.
