An armed robber who took prescription pills in a holdup of a Unity pharmacy Tuesday likely used an all-terrain vehicle for his escape, state police at Greensburg said Wednesday.
Police said an alert woman eating a breakfast sandwich in her car near the CVS Pharmacy in Mountain Laurel Plaza snapped photographs of a suspicious man on her cell phone camera and forwarded them to police after learning of the robbery at 9:05 a.m. Tuesday.
"This woman who came forward saw a suspicious-looking man wearing a hood and goggles pull up on his quad that morning on a hillside that overlooks the plaza parking lot. She had been a robbery victim herself and thought this guy was acting suspicious enough that she should photograph him," Trooper Steve Limani said.
He said the woman became alarmed when she saw him surveying the parking lot for several minutes.
"We're glad she took the photographs, because it gives us more information to go on. The photographs lead us to believe he doesn't live too far away from there," Limani said.
Limani said investigators believe the robber may live south of Route 30, possibly in the Whitney or Hostetter areas of Unity. The robber probably stayed south of Route 30 because the four-lane highway is heavily traveled, and a quad being ridden along the highway would have drawn a lot of attention, police said.
After exiting the store, the robber ran, climbed up the hillside and likely fled on an all-terrain vehicle into the woods behind the plaza, police said.
Witnesses described the robber as stocky in appearance, about 35 to 45 years old, between 5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet tall, wearing jeans, boots and a camouflage sweatshirt. According to police, he jumped on the counter when he entered the store and demanded specific pills.
Pharmacy employees provided the drugs, and the suspect fled out a back door. Police said he had a handgun.
Limani said police appreciate citizens being observant and reporting suspicious activity.
"I know I try to preach it all the time. I hope this woman's information leads to us making an arrest," he said.
Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call police at 724-832-3288.
