A Point Breeze man is jailed on charges of vehicular homicide after a crash in Penn Hills that killed a woman and critically injured her 9-year-old son.
Christine Beilstein, 45, of Plum died around 1 p.m. Saturday, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office. Her son, whom police did not identify, was flown to a local hospital with severe head injuries. He was in critical condition.
Allegheny County police charged Duane C. Woodson, 50, with vehicular homicide and leaving an accident scene. Police said Woodson was driving a tow truck in the 1000 block of Milltown Road and crossed into opposing traffic, colliding head-on with Beilstein's vehicle.
Woodson, who was not licensed, attempted to flee the accident scene on foot, but was caught, police said.
Sandy Bollinger, who works at the nearby Penn Hills Community Market and could see the scene in front of an apartment building, said Milltown Road is a mix of homes and businesses.
Bollinger said there have been previous crashes on the same road.
Police said investigators will review the case with the District Attorney's Office and additional charges are likely.
