A Washington County woman was seriously injured Thursday when a tractor-trailer rig struck her car on Interstate 70 in Hempfield.

Heidi Saffin, no age available, of Charleroi, was transported to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh. She had to be extricated from her vehicle, according to emergency crews.

The hospital had no report on the extent of her injuries.

State police at Belle Vernon said the driver of the rig, Michael Mollohan, 64, of Parkersburg, W.Va., was cited for careless driving. Mollohan reported fog was a factor in the crash, which occurred in the westbound lanes of the highway just outside New Stanton at 8:39 p.m. Thursday.

Police said both vehicles were westbound, and Saffin had slowed down because of the fog and limited visibility. Police said Mollohan failed to slow down and struck Saffin's 2008 Kia from behind.

Saffin was wearing a seat belt.
