Women’s Show will offer information, products
Working women, soccer moms and singles all will find something to take home from the Pittsburgh Women’s Show — whether it’s good deals, good cooking or good advice.
In its third year, the two-day event this weekend offers women the opportunity to get their closets and lives in order, learn about weight loss, sip tea at a tea party, pamper themselves with a back rub, makeover and new hairdo, and much more, all in one location.
Organizers Ellen DiOrio of Bethel Park and Cathy Dernorsek of North Versailles, who have a combined 20-plus years of experience in producing consumer and trade shows, feel the idea of “one-stop shopping” appeals to women who are great multi-taskers but often have little time left for their own needs and desires.
“Women’s shows are becoming very popular across the country as so many companies try to find ways to get in front of us with their products and services,” DiOrio says. “Cathy and I wanted to provide this kind of forum for the Pittsburgh market, and have looked to other cities’ women’s shows for ways to do just that.”
The target age group for the show is 25 to 55, although women of all ages will find something of interest. As many as 5,000 women are expected to attend during its two-day run, DiOrio says. This year’s event features 150 exhibitor booths, fashion shows, cooking demonstrations, speakers and networking and shopping opportunities.
A newcomer to the show will be Single Steps Strategies, a Bethel Park-based life-planning service dedicated to empowering divorced, widowed and single women. Executive Director Mary Grace Musuneggi says her booth will provide information about joining the service and gaining access to educational opportunities and advice from her team of 40 resource providers that includes attorneys, personal trainers, life coaches, psychologists and financial planners.
“Eighty-seven percent of all women will spend some part of their adult lives as a single. Some decide by choice, but for the majority of us, it’s somehow by chance,” Musuneggi says.
Women need professional guidance at times in their lives when they often feel the most vulnerable, she says.
“Women have less of a tendency than men to ask for help for fear that people won’t think they can handle matters on their own,” says Musuneggi, who is a financial planner.
A one-year membership to Single Steps Strategies costs $29.95 and entitles members to access to the Web site, www.singlestepsstrategies.com, where they will find details about events and seminars, a newsletter and free services of consultants and resource providers.
One of the featured guest speakers at the women’s show will be Michaele Parees, associate of Family Wealth Management of Sewickley. She and her partner, Ralph Linarelli, will present a workshop titled “Smart Women Finish Rich,” based on a book by the same name by David Bach.
The workshop will outline nine steps to achieving financial security and funding women’s dreams, although she adds that “rich isn’t necessarily all about having money. It’s being happy and loving your life.”
One way for a woman to find out how she stands financially is by “knowing your latte factor, or how much money she spends in a single day,” she says. By cutting out extraneous expenses throughout each day — such as a latte in the morning or a biscotti and diet soda in the afternoon — a woman can save as much as $10 a week.
“We’re not telling people not to enjoy themselves, but to make a purposeful decision about how to spend their money and what’s important to you,” she says. Her workshops will be offered at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday and at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
Exhibits at the women’s show are categorized into themed areas that include health and fitness, leisure and sports, home and family, food and nutrition, business, career development and finance, and fashion and image.
A variety of home party representatives will display product samples and give women insight into having their own parties.
“So many home parties are cropping up,” DiOrio says. “They’re perfect for those women who are trying to find some time for a business while raising kids.”
The event planner says the Pittsburgh Women’s Show gives ladies an opportunity for some fun and relaxation.
“There are car shows, boat shows and gun shows for the guys,” she says. “This one is for us gals.”
