Worker killed in mine accident

A bulldozer driver who worked for a Washington County company died Thursday in an accident at a Consol Energy mine in West Virginia's Northern Panhandle, according to the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration.

The man was pinned between the bulldozer and a water truck at Consol's McElroy Mine in Marshall County about 9:45 a.m., MSHA spokeswoman Amy Louviere said. Consol said the man, whose identity was not released, worked for 18 Karat, which is based in Eighty Four.

He was attaching a tow chain to the truck when the bulldozer rolled backward and pinned him, Louviere said.

McElroy is an underground mine, but the accident occurred on the surface at the site of a gas well that was being plugged. The vehicles involved belong to separate contractors, not Consol.
