A man who cut a power line in an attempt to break into the Springdale Veterans' Association hall along Pittsburgh Street early Wednesday could have been electrocuted when he cut a 220-volt line. 'The guys from the power company can't believe the person who cut that 220 (volt) line isn't dead,' Springdale Police Chief Joseph Naviglia said. Several robberies in the past few days throughout Allegheny County have authorities looking for those responsible, although most details are sketchy. Naviglia said someone cut the 220-volt power line to the building. Clocks inside stopped at 4:30 a.m. Police got an alarm call, apparently an hour later, when generators kicked on. Naviglia said police responded and initially found nothing. But when they were called back at 8:10 a.m., police discovered that the power line had been cut, the skylights on the roof tampered with and a rear window broken. Burglars weren't able to get inside. County police also are investigating a series of other robberies in Verona, Indiana Township and Hampton. A restaurant in Verona, a pizza shop in Indiana Township and two more in Hampton apparently were broken into Wednesday or Thursday. There have been no arrests. Allegheny County Police Detective Sgt. Robert Downey said police believe that the robberies are connected because entry seemed to be through the roof. Downey did not have any more information late Thursday. Indiana Township and Verona police departments did not return several calls placed to each office for comment on the investigation. Leslie Suhr can be reached at lsuhr@tribweb.com .
