There were not too many surprises in the WPIAL Class AAA sectional wrestling pairings that were released Thursday.
Section winners Greater Latrobe (Section 1), Connellsville Area (Section 2) and Kiski Area (Section 4) had the most seeded wrestlers in their sectionals, which will begin Saturday.
Greater Latrobe and Penn-Trafford each had four No. 1 seeds in Section 1, Connellsville had eight in Section 2, and Kiski Area had seven in Section 4.
Pairings for the WPIAL Class AA Championships were also released, and they showed the strength of Section 1. The tournament will be held Saturday at Trinity High School in Washington.
Here are some of the highlights of the pairings:
CLASS AA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Class AA pairings were dominated by teams from Section 1. Burrell had three No. 1 seeds -- Joe Makara (125 pounds), Jason Makara (130) and Jared Shields (140) -- and Jeannette and Southmoreland had two each, while Mt. Pleasant Area and Shady Side Academy had one each.
The others were Larry Hall (119) and A.J. Graves (152) of Jeannette, Shane Datz (189) and Justin Poole (275) of Southmoreland, Zach Holt (103) of Mt. Pleasant Area and Damian Johnson (160) of Shady Side Academy.
The other seeded wrestlers were Bill Marks (112) of Charleroi Area, Damian Rose (135) and Kurt Brenner (171) of Freedom Area, Stush Demaske (145) of Jefferson Morgan and Jake Jahnke (215) of Mars Area.
Makara is going after his fourth WPIAL title, while Hall is in search of his third. Datz, Brenner and Phil Rowe of Burrell are in search of their second titles.
"Each tournament is just another step," said Joe Makara, a returning PIAA champion. "Winning four WPIAL titles would be special."
The top five wrestlers in each weight class advance to the PIAA Southwest Regional at the University of Pitt-Johnstown on Feb. 28 and March 1.
SECTION 1-AAA
Kevin Visnick of Franklin Regional and Sam Ansel of Greater Latrobe will be going after their third section titles, while Donnie Jones and Eric Svec of Greensburg Salem, Tommy Picarsic, Nate Picarsic and Nick Padezan of Penn-Trafford, and Justin Smith of Greensburg Central Catholic are in search of their second titles.
Padezan's title came during the 2001 tournament, while Smith's title came when he was a member of Penn-Trafford.
The Latrobe wrestlers who earned the No. 1 seeds were Zach Small (103), Pete Elers (112), Bryan Lekawa (145) and Ansel (215). Tommy Picarsic (135), Nate Picarsic (152), Charlie Pienaar (171) and Padezan (189) were the No. 1 seeds for Penn-Trafford.
SECTION 2-AAA
Jarrod King of Connellsville Area and John Ptak of Albert Gallatin are in search of their third straight section titles.
Both are among the six returning champs in the section. The others are Dave Thorn and Mitch Pankiewicz of Ringgold, and Josh Martin and Kyle Martin of Connellsville.
The Falcons' No. 1 seeds were King (152), Josh Martin (130), Kyle Martin (140), Steven Bell (112), Ashtin Primus (119), Jason Doppelheuer (171), Jim Tony (189) and Steve Hughes (275).
Albert Gallatin and Ringgold each had three top seeds. They were Thorn (103), Pankiewicz (125) and Brandon Baldini (135) of Ringgold, and Ptak (160), Ryan Howell (145) and Marc Berry (215) of Albert Gallatin.
SECTION 4-AAA
While no wrestlers are going after their third titles, seven have a shot at earning their second crowns.
They are Dan Enciso and Logan Downes of Valley, Angelo Manifest and Mike Corcetti of Kiski Area, Steve Chirieleison of Plum, Bill Spencer of Highlands and Sean Clair of Plum. Enciso and Chirieleison were winners in 2001.
The Cavaliers, the WPIAL champions, No. 1 seeds were Zach McKendree (112), A.J. Milanak (130), Manifest (135), Kurt Lorenz (140), Corcetti (171), Andrew Joseph (189) and Scott McKillop (215).
