WPIAL softball playoffs roundup: Latrobe shuts out No. 10 Bethel Park
No. 7-seeded Latrobe scored four runs in the first inning and continued to put the pressure on No. 10 Bethel Park en route to a 10-0 victory in six innings during a WPIAL Class AAAA first-round softball game Monday at Gateway.
Despite not having an extra-base hit, Latrobe (15-5) had no issue scoring as it ripped single after single until the mercy rule was put into effect.
“I think that’s what we were looking for in the past couple of weeks,” Latrobe coach Alexa Pinto said. “We were getting hits but we just needed to string them together, so it’s nice to see it all come together at such an important time of the season.”
Reilly McCracken went 3 for 3 with an RBI for the Wildcats. Morgan Schwitzer and Makayla Munchinsky each recorded two hits. Seven different players drove in a run for Latrobe.
Bethel Park (12-7) had trouble getting anything started against Latrobe ace Meredith Carr, who surrendered just two hits in five innings while striking out five.
“They’re a very good team. They fielded well and we beat ourselves a little bit too,” Bethel Park coach Heather Scott said. “Unfortunately, Latrobe was a better team than us today, but it’s been a battle all year and I’m proud of our girls.”
