Penn-Trafford coach Vince Testa was pleased with his team's performance at the WPIAL Class AAA Wrestling Championship / PIAA Southwest Region Tournament.
The Warriors had two wrestlers - Mike Cardamone (152) and Jason Jones (160) - qualify for a trip to Hershey, and four others win at least two matches.
'We had an excellent tournament,' Testa said. 'We had a lot of guys gain valuable experience on the mat. It should help the younger guys.'
Cardamone ended up finishing second in the 152-pound weight class, and Jones placed third at 160 pounds with a 5-4 victory against Mike Crocetti of Kiski Area.
SWEET REVENGE
Aaron Olszewski of Belle Vernon earned a trip to Hershey for the PIAA Class AAA Championship the hard way.
The senior lost a 3-2 overtime decision to Chad Maggi of Canon-McMillan in the 112-pound opening round when he was penalized for grabbing the jersey of Maggi.
He won five consecutive matches to finish third.
One of those victories included a pin in the rematch against Maggi in the consolation semifinal round match. Olszewski decked the junior from Canon-McMillan in the first period.
Olszewski, now 28-4, defeated Scott Hutton of Chartiers Valley 5-2 for third place.
CENTURY CLUB
Four wrestlers reached the 100-win milestone during the tournament. They were Dan Pacitti of Moon, Kellen Campbell of West Allegheny, T.J. Hunsberger of Moon and Matt Donofrio of Seneca Valley.
COMING UP SHORT
There were four wrestlers who qualified for the 2000 tournament that did not qualify this year. They are Matt Donofrio of Seneca Valley, Kirk Main of McGuffey, Matt Kirsopp of Chartiers Valley and John Ferens of Connellsville. Two other PIAA placewinners, Chad Seybold of Waynesburg and John Jolley of Belle Vernon, did not compete because of injuries.
THIS AND THAT
Garrett Bele of Penn-Trafford did not compete in the tournament because he was diagnosed with mononucleosis on Friday. Bele showed signs of the illness at the Section 1 finals on Feb. 28. ... The finals got underway a &*#189; late. ... The paid attendance for the three session this weekend were: 1,224 (Friday), 1,200 (Saturday morning) and 1,300 (Saturday night). ... The WPIAL was informed by Robert Morris officials that it may need to find a place for the 2003 tournament because the Sewall Center may not be available because the Robert Morris women have a home game scheduled. The tournament will probably return to the Sewall Center next year.
