NEW YORK - Andy Pettitte pitched seven vigorous innings, Hideki Matsui hit one of two homers off an ineffective Curt Schilling, and the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox, 8-3, on Wednesday night.
Light-hitting Doug Mientkiewicz also connected, and Derek Jeter passed Joe DiMaggio for fifth place on the franchise hits list to help the Yankees take two of three in the series and move within 9 1/2 games of AL East-leading Boston.
Matsui drove in three runs, while Jeter, Mientkiewicz and Johnny Damon had three hits apiece. New York roughed up Schilling (4-2) for 12 hits, the most he had allowed since yielding 13 on April 22, 2004, at Toronto.
American League
Tigers 8, Angels 7
In Detroit, Magglio Ordonez had his 20th two-homer game, and the Tigers snapped the Angels' six-game winning streak.
Carlos Guillen and Curtis Granderson also homered for Detroit. Granderson drove in three runs, Placido Polanco drove in two and Ivan Rodriguez was 3 for 4.
Mike Napoli's three-run homer in the eighth off of Jose Mesa pulled the Angels within 7-6. Orlando Cabrera and Shea Hillenbrand also hit home runs for the Angels.
Orioles 5, Blue Jays 2
In Baltimore, Corey Patterson stole home at the end of a botched rundown, Brian Roberts went 3 for 3 with two walks, and the Orioles beat the Blue Jays.
Steve Trachsel (3-3) allowed two runs, five hits and three walks in six innings. The right-hander left with a 3-2 lead, and the beleaguered Baltimore bullpen made the advantage stand up.
Before Chris Ray got three straight outs for his 11th save in 14 chances, Chad Bradford and Jamie Walker each pitched a perfect inning.
Mariners 5, Devil Rays 1
In St. Petersburg, Fla., Jose Guillen had four hits and two RBI, Miguel Batista gave up one run in six innings, and the Mariners beat the Devil Rays.
Guillen's single in the seventh drove in Jason Ellison and Ichiro Suzuki. Guillen is 14 for 37 with three home runs and 17 RBI in his last 10 games, raising his average from .176 to .282.
Batista (4-4) stopped a personal two-game losing skid. He allowed seven hits, two walks and had five strikeouts.
Twins 5, Rangers 3
In Arlington, Texas, Justin Morneau homered for the third time in two games, and Boof Bonser won his third straight start.
Morneau's 14th homer of the season, a solo drive in the third off Robinson Tejeda (4-4), gave Minnesota a 3-1 lead.
Sammy Sosa pinch-hit for Texas with two on and two outs in the ninth and struck out, remaining two home runs shy of 600.
National League
Mets 3, Braves 0
In Atlanta, Oliver Perez pitched seven scoreless innings, and David Wright hit his fourth homer in the last four games for the Mets.
The first-place Mets increased their lead over Atlanta in the NL East to 2 1/2 games.
Perez (6-3) gave up only four hits and two walks in seven innings. He struck out five batters while winning his third straight start.
