When environmentalists preoccupied with “climate change” team up with the federal nutrition police, it’s a recipe for disaster.
Witness the 2015 update to the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which are revised every five years. The federal departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services rely on recommendations from the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee to modify the nation’s nutrition standards.
And that’s where the wheels fall off the buggy.
The committee includes “radical nutritionists” who want to save the planet by moving Americans to a “plant-based diet,” The Washington Free Beacon reports. “Overall, we want to be certain to make recommendations for a healthy, ecologically responsible diet,” says committee chairwoman Barbara Millen.
So, nutrition advice will be based not exclusively on dietary considerations but on what’s considered to be “ecologically” healthful for the planet? Even if most Americans ignore this nonsense, the guidelines ultimately affect federal nutrition programs, such as school meals, notes Daren Bakst for The Heritage Foundation.
Congress must not allow extremists to ride roughshod over what Americans eat. If an environmental crusade creeps into what are supposed to be nutrition guidelines, then lawmakers must withhold funding for the guidelines.
And let the dietary despots chew on that.
