Operation Santa Claus: No better bargain
At a time when retailers advertise some of their biggest bargains of the year, there’s one truly remarkable deal that’s tough to beat: $17.25 for a traditional Christmas dinner that will feed a family of four.
That’s how far your donated dollars go through Trib Total Media’s Operation Santa Claus. Since 1984, the all-volunteer program, in conjunction with Shop ‘n Save and the Salvation Army, has spread holiday cheer by providing dinners to more than 7,000 needy Southwestern Pennsylvania families across five counties. Children will receive coloring books, crayons and new or gently used storybooks as well.
All money donated by individuals, families and businesses goes directly toward purchasing groceries. Fundraising began earlier this year with Operation Santa Claus’ inaugural Soup for a Claus event, which served up savory soups for nearly 300 ticket buyers in downtown Greensburg. This year’s overall campaign goal is $120,000.
Just fill out the coupon that appears daily in the Trib to make a tax-deductible contribution. Or you can make a donation on behalf of a recipient on your gift list. Either way, each dollar donated will buy more food than shoppers could purchase on their own.
What drives this sleigh o’plenty is neighbors helping neighbors in what’s become a local holiday tradition — one that feeds the Christmas spirit of donors and recipients alike. During this season of giving, there’s no better bargain.
