Inspired choice: The Pittsburgh Penguins could have played it safe and hired some run-of-the-mill architectural firms to design apartments and public spaces for the old Civic Arena site. But that would have been uninspiring if not downright boring. Instead, the NHL franchise chose Bjarke Ingels Group (known as BIG), the renowned Danish firm. This was an inspired choice. We’re glad to see the Penguins thinking big.

An opportunity: Michael Vick’s signing by the Pittsburgh Steelers has sparked renewed dialogue about animal abuse. And that, of course, is a very good thing. And abuse can include everything from the despicably overt — and we’ll spare you such details here — to the honestly unintentional. (Think leaving a dog in a vehicle on a hot summer day, even with the windows partially down.) Today is a good day to make a donation to your local animal welfare organization to help them better educate the public.

Summer’s not done: September bows today hazy, hot and humid. Which is a good reminder that though the return to school and the return of football (among other sports) makes everyone think of fall, summer is far from done with its run. Which makes this a good time to remind all of those sporting types — and, yes, this includes cheerleaders and band members — to stay hydrated. That said, we’ll all be griping about the cold soon enough.
