Saturday essay: New beds
The last vestiges of Christmas are gone from the house. The back deck plants, wintering inside but now with more post-holiday space options, are being repositioned for maximum January sun. And the seedling trays are yelling from the basement, “Hey, can we come upstairs?”
The seed catalogs, nearly a dozen, neatly are stacked at the ready on the dining room table, their pages marked with scores of protruding sticky notes. It’s an early wish list for not only the coming indoor sowing season but for spring’s direct-sow carnival.
A more practical list soon will come together, barely making the late-month ordering deadline for “guaranteed timely delivery.” But, surely, additional growing space will be needed to make possible even the final “practicals.”
The tomatoes and peppers will, as per usual, go into 10-gallon buckets. Two of the nine raised beds were planted in garlic late in October. Which leaves seven open beds — for green beans, cabbage, cucumbers, celery, onions, cauliflower and broccoli.
That pretty much clinches the case for at least two new beds to handle the usual several varieties of lettuce. And with plenty of hardly January weather apparently ahead, construction can begin soon.
But where, oh, where to put the new beds? Ah, making that decision will be half the fun.
