Dick Scaife's death on Independence Day was a sad day for those of us who came to know him during his long and full life. There is no question that he wielded considerable influence on public policy and business through his actions, contributions and passion.
Since his passing, we have learned a great deal more from national and local figures, who cited his patriotism, love of country and impact on their lives. In kind and inspirational words of remembrance, they all painted a picture of a deep and highly complex man.
My view of Dick Scaife was more personal.
I knew Dick Scaife as a gentle presence who changed lives quietly — a contemplative person who never sought fanfare or praise for his good works. He was, simply, a man of ample means who decided one day to step up and make a difference in my life and my community.
One of the many issues that he provided guidance on was the recent redistricting of the 45th Senatorial District. Because of his support and encouragement, I chose to challenge the redistricting process in the Supreme Court, which ultimately was won on behalf of hundreds of thousands of people who would have been negatively impacted by the original plan.
This was a historic political victory, and without his guidance it would not have happened. It is just one example of his willingness to get involved with issues that were important to people, regardless of party affiliation.
Our relationship began when I was mayor and he reached out to ask what he could do to help McKeesport. He was well read about the city's problems and expressed ideas about the contributions he could make to better McKeesport.
Mr. Scaife's concern was genuine and he immediately put actions behind his words. From that first call and through our first project until the end of his life, he was amenable to my requests and often bolstered city initiatives. It is noteworthy that not only did he provide his financial support behind a cause, he visited often and was personally involved in my effort as mayor of McKeesport to stop the violence in our region.
Mr. Scaife cared little that he was going out of his way to help a Democrat mayor of a Democrat city finish projects that helped a financially stressed city. His compassion for his country, his state and his fellow man were very obvious.
Mr. Scaife made significant contributions and played a role in helping McKeesport and many other local communities during very difficult times. There is no doubt that he was an American hero and a great mentor for me. His legacy will not be forgotten.
Jim Brewster represents the 45th Senatorial District in the state Senate.
