There’s a growing movement sweeping through U.S. cities — committing to 100-percent renewable energy. This is a major step toward curbing the effects of climate change, because urban areas are responsible for roughly 75 percent of carbon dioxide emissions.

With federal and state government failing to address climate change, cities are stepping up to lead the way, with a major boost from the Sierra Club.

The environmental organization’s Ready for 100 campaign, which sets the goal of a city’s electricity supply being sourced from 100 percent renewables by no later than 2035, launched in January 2016 and already has commitments from 29 cities. Add to that the seven cities that are already powered 100 percent by renewables, and the movement is gaining momentum.

Pittsburgh, though, is not among the 29 cities, nor does it find its mayor, Bill Peduto, among the 45 mayors across the country who have pledged their support for a community-wide transition to 100-percent renewables.

Peduto, however, has voiced his support for renewable energy, and has taken small steps toward moving the city toward them.

Pittsburghers still need to voice their support for a clean, green and healthy future. Please help Peduto be a leader and encourage him to commit to 100-percent renewable energy.
