1st-place boys basketball matchups in Friday’s 3 things to watch in HS sports
With about two weeks left in the basketball section schedule, title races will decided soon.
Here are three boys basketball matchups Friday night that should help decide which teams earn a plaque at the WPIAL basketball pairings meetings.
Seton LaSalle at North Catholic, 7:30 p.m.
When these two teams met Dec. 29, Seton LaSalle won 81-57. That win gave the Rebels (13-1, 8-0) the early lead over North Catholic (12-3, 6-1) in Section 2.
They’ll rematch at North Catholic.
Ambridge at New Castle, 7:30 p.m.
The top-ranked Bridgers (11-5, 6-1) and third-ranked Red Hurricanes (12-3, 6-1) are tied for first in Section 2-4A. The two teams have yet to face one another this season but will play twice in the next 17 days. They’ll play Friday at New Castle, then rematch Feb. 10 at Ambridge.
But don’t count out Quaker Valley (11-2, 5-2), which has a game left against both Ambridge and New Castle.
Franklin Regional at Mars, 7:30 p.m.
This could be the last hurdle between Mars and winning the Section 3-5A title.
The top-ranked Planets (15-1, 9-0) have a one-game lead over fifth-ranked Franklin Regional (13-4, 8-1). In the teams’ first head-to-head matchup this season, Mars won 59-51 on Dec. 17.
