Allegheny names former ODU defensive coordinator Rich Nagy as football coach

Allegheny welcomed back a familiar face in filling its vacant football coaching position.

Rich Nagy, who served as a grad assistant for the Gators in 1988-89 before returning for a stint in the ’90s during which he was associate head coach, was hired to replace BJ Hammer. Hammer was hired as Bowdoin’s coach last month after leading Allegheny to its most successful football season in years.

Nagy, a native of Fairfield, Conn., comes to Meadville after serving as defensive coordinator at Old Dominion. Prior to that, he served three seasons as Western Michigan’s defensive coordinator.

He inherits a team that is coming off a 6-4 season, including 6-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. It was the Gators’ first winning season in the NCAC since 2012.

The 2019 Gators will return all-conference first-team receiver Alex Victor, NCAC Special Teams Player of the Year Chase Balla (Valley) and second-team all-conference offensive lineman Rafael Balanquet.
