Campus clippings: Springdale’s Killian gets another award
Joe Killian added yet another postseason honor to his decorated senior season at Allegheny.
The third baseman from Springdale was named ABCA/Rawling All-Mideast Region. He also picked up D3Baseball.com All-Mideast Region honors and was voted NCAC Player of the Year.
A four-time all-conference player, Killian led the NCAC in batting average (.438), slugging percentage (.701), total bases (101) and home runs (six). He finished his career with a school-record 52 doubles, and his 211 hits place him third in program history. He also drove in 145 runs and scored 141.
Allegheny finished 21-14 and posted its fourth straight 20-win season.
Senior infielder/designated hitter Zarley Zalewski (Valley) helped lead the Golden Flashes to a 40-plus-win season and the top seed in the Mid-American Conference Tournament. Zalewski, a potential pick in the upcoming MLB Draft, led the team with 51 runs and 19 doubles through 55 games. He ranked in the top three in average (.353), hits (77), home runs (five) and RBIs (54).
Senior pitcher Tyler Swarmer(Leechburg) contributed to the Highlanders’ run to the semifinals of the Big South Tournament. A left-hander, Swarmer finished 5-5 in 14 starts. His ERA was 4.72, and he struck out 43 with 27 walks in 68 2⁄3 innings.
