Mars graduate Robby Carmody started for Notre Dame in the season-opener Tuesday night.

Robby Carmody became the first true freshman at Notre Dame to start in his college basketball debut in 16 years.

The former Mars standout scored 11 points in 14 minutes for the Irish, who downed visiting Illinois-Chicago, 84-67, on Tuesday night.

Torin Francis was the last true first-year player to crack the top five for the Irish, in 2002.

Carmody (6-foot-4, 204 pounds) was the Gatorade Pennsylvania Player of the Year last season at Mars where he led the Planets to a WPIAL Class 5A title and a PIAA runner-up finish. He averaged 31.1 points, 14.1 rebounds, 4.3 steals and 1.6 blocks as a senior. He had 2,390 career points.
