Norwin grad Chad Coles is piching for the Butler Blue Sox this summer in the Prospect League. Coles is a rising sophomore at Youngstown State.

Chad Coles missed his senior baseball season at Norwin while recovering from a torn labrum that occurred during wrestling season.

He didn’t pitch last summer, either.

His freshman season at Youngstown State didn’t go as planned as he finished 1-1 with a 13.18 ERA.

“I played a lot, and I learned a lot my freshman season,” said Coles who pitched in more than 28 innings. “In college, there are a lot of good players. It was eye-opening.”

But Coles is pitching much better this summer playing for the Butler BlueSox in the Prospect Collegiate League. The league features a lot of college players from the area.

He is 1-1 with one save and a 1.10 ERA. He has thrown 16 13 innings (three starts), allowing two earned runs with 19 strikeouts.

“There are a lot of things I need to work on at Butler,” Coles said. “I need to command the strike zone better, and I’m working on a few new pitches. That’s my goal this summer.”

Coles is scheduled to start against first-place West Virginia on Tuesday.

The BlueSox (4-14) are coached by former Seton Hill player Cody Herald. There are three Seton Hill players on the roster: redshirt junior outfielder Andrew Chuba (Steel Valley), redshirt junior catcher Colton Carney and redshirt sophomore infielder Chris Law (Knoch).

Chuba leads the BlueSox with a .379 batting average with 22 hits, four doubles and 14 stolen bases. Carney is hitting .222, but he leads the team with three home runs and 12 RBIs.

Law is off to a slow start after being one of the top hitters for the Griffins. He is hitting .148 with seven runs scored.
