Hempfield graduate Monica Burns' record free-throw streak ends at 118

The streak is over.

But Monica Burns is determined to start a new one.

The redshirt junior point guard at Wheeling Jesuit missed a free throw Monday night to end her and record streak at 118 makes in a row.

The Hempfield graduate started the streak Jan. 10, 2017 — a span of 24 games.

She went to the line Monday after making her first two attempts, but her third missed with 5 minutes, 37 seconds to play in the second quarter. Wheeling Jesuit (1-5) lost 67-50 at Notre Dame College in Ohio.

Last season, Burns led the nation in free-throw percentage at 94.6 (139 of 147).

“It's very humbling to accomplish something such as this,” Burns said. “It was something very unexpected but something I knew I was capable of doing.”

Burns' streak has staying power.

Although the pressure is off — “Yeah, I guess you could say that,” she said — Burns already has her spot in the record books.

“Might be a long time ... if this is ever broken,” Wheeling Jesuit sports information director Chris Myers said.

No NBA or WNBA player, or any male or female at the Division I, II or III levels, had even made 100 straight foul shots.
