IUP football remains at No. 4 in AFCA Division II coaches poll
The IUP football team, coming off a 21-17 season-opening win at No. 15 Ashland, solidified its No. 4 ranking in the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Top 25 poll released Monday.
A connection from a pair of former WPIAL stars provided the game-winning score as quarterback Lenny Williams Jr., a Sto-Rox graduate, found wideout Ricky Rogers, a Gateway product, on a 13-yard touchdown pass with 10 minutes left.
The top seven teams in the poll remained unchanged. Texas A&M-Commerce (1-0) is at No. 1, followed by West Florida (1-0) at No. 2 and Minnesota State (1-0) at No. 3.
Fort Hays State (1-0) rounds out the top five, with Northwest Missouri State (1-0) at No. 6, Hardin (1-0) at No. 7, Grand Valley State (1-0) at No. 8, Ferris State (1-0) at No. 9, and Midwestern State (1-0) at No. 10.
Williams totaled 277 yards and threw three touchdowns to Rogers, who was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division Offensive Athlete of the Week for his performance. Rogers caught six passes for 73 yards, scoring touchdowns in the first, second and fourth quarters.
West Chester (1-0) is the only other PSAC team in the poll as it checks in at No. 23.
With season-opening wins, PSAC members Shippensburg, Bloomsburg, Edinboro, California, Slippery Rock and Kutztown all are receiving votes.
