Winthrop shortstop Maddie Antone, a Kiski Area graduate, leads the team in hitting.

Matt Grafton is only a sophomore, but he has found a place in the track and field record books at Penn State Behrend.

Grafton, a Kittanning graduate, became the program’s all-time point scorer in the decathlon during the Cortland (N.Y.) Classic.

Grafton finished in the top 20 in five events, including a win in the 1,500-meter run, which he finished in 4 minutes, 38.83 seconds. His day also saw him take third in the 110-meter hurdles, ninth in the discus, 11th in the javelin and 15th in the pole vault.

His point total was 5,743.

Men’s track and field


Junior Aaron Frye (Kiski Area) won the high jump in a tiebreaker, with a mark of 6-foot, at the PAC South Quad Meet. He also took third in the triple jump (39-11 14). Teammate Donald Bierhals (Knoch) ran the second leg of the winning 1,600-meter relay (3:28.35) and also finished third in the open 800.



Junior third baseman Joe Killian (Springdale) went 4 for 9 with an RBI and two runs in a two-game sweep of Oberlin, 7-6 and 16-12.

Grove City

Sophomore catcher Andy Fritz (Knoch) had three hits, including a double, and a team-high five RBIs in a doubleheader split against Westminster.

Slippery Rock

Sophomore outfielder Logan Brown (Kiski Area) had four hits and scored twice in a doubleheader sweep of Clarion, 9-8 and 10-6. In a two-game split against Bloomsburg, he went 3 for 5 with three runs, a homer and a double.


St. Francis (Pa.)

Freshman shortstop Jordan Seneca (Plum) was named NEC Rookie of the Week. She hit .438, raising her average 39 points, and scored seven runs as the Red Flash went 3-1 in conference play. She went 3-for-4 with three runs and hit her first career home run against LIU in an extra-inning win.


Sophomore shortstop Maddie Antone (Kiski Area) continues to be the one of the Eagles’ top offensive threats. Through 32 starts, Antone was leading the team (19-23, 8-9 Big South) in batting average (.389), home runs (four), runs scored (31) and was second in RBIs (27).

Women’s tennis


Junior Ronit Yurovsky (Plum) won at No. 1 singles to help lead the No. 14 Wolverines (19-3) to a 4-0 win over Penn State that clinched the team’s sixth straight Big Ten title. Yurovsky, ranked 31st in the country, is 17-2 this season.

Women’s track and field

Cal (Pa.)

Senior Bria Jay (Plum) helped the Vulcans’ 400-meter relay team break the school record during the Dave Labor Invitational at Slippery Rock. The foursome finished in a winning time of 46.77 seconds to break the previous mark, set in 2012, by 0.25 seconds.



Senior captain Justin Miller (Riverview) carded back-to-back top-20 finishes for the Bears. After shooting rounds of 77 and 81 to take 16th at the MET Intercollegiate, he shot a 74-72-146 to take 17th at the Princeton Invitational. The 74 came at Aronimink Golf Club, and the 72 at Merion Golf Club, site of the 2013 U.S. Open.


FreshmanMatt Barto (Leechburg) posted his best round at the college level with a 3-under-par 67 at the Gannon Spring Invitational at Peek ‘n Peak Resort (N.Y.). He finished second after a two-hole playoff.

St. Bonaventure

Freshman Patrick Sheerer (Fox Chapel) has played in seven tournaments this season and is averaging 80.6 per round. He opened with a 2-over 72 at the Greenbrier Collegiate before finishing 54th. His best finish was 32nd at the Cape Fear National Intercollegiate where he shot 76-79-78 over 54 holes.


Penn State

Redshirt freshman Matt McCutcheon(Kiski Area), a 184-pounder, won the program’s Kaye Vinson Award for most improved wrestler. This season, he finished with a record of 26-14 and reached the NCAA Tournament where he was one win shy of All-America status.

Women’s basketball

Slippery Rock

Freshman Krista Pietropola (Plum) has transferred to Slippery Rock after a year at Youngstown State. She played in 22 games last season for the Penguins, averaging 1.7 points and 1.1 rebounds in 5.3 minutes.
