Marlins select Mercyhurst's Vallimont in fifth round
Mercyhurst College junior pitcher Chris Vallimont racked up numerous conference, regional and national awards for the 2018 spring season.
Tuesday afternoon, the Erie native and Mercyhurst Prep graduate, added another honor to his portfolio.
The Miami Marlins selected the 6-foot-5 right-hander in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
The Lakers standout was the 147th overall pick, the second highest in Mercyhurst history behind 2014 draftee and current Seattle Mariner Dan Altavilla.
Vallimont is the 19th player in the history of Mercyhurst baseball to be selected in the MLB draft.
This season, he helped the Lakers reach their second NCAA Division II Baseball Championship tournament.
He went 10-3 with a program-record 147 strikeouts and a 2.58 ERA in 80 1⁄3 innings.
Vallimont's 16.47 strikeouts per nine innings was the highest in Division II.
He registered two complete games and four shutouts and limited opposing batters to a .143 average.
