Seton Hill's DellaValle drafted by Cardinals
Perry DellaValle got a call Tuesday from the St. Louis Cardinals about being drafted in the current Major League Baseball draft.
The Cardinals on Wednesday made it official, picking the Seton Hill right-hander in the 27th round.
“I can't believe it. It's crazy,” DellaValle said. “I thought they'd call me Tuesday, but they called today, and that's OK as long as I go.”
DellaValle is the third Seton Hill baseball player to be drafted. He was the 813th pick in the draft.
Rick Austin was taken with the 833rd pick of the draft by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 27th round of the 2007 draft. Alex Haines was picked in the 33rd round by the Colorado Rockies in the 2013 draft. Nick Sell signed a free-agent contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers after the 2015 draft.
DellaValle worked eight scoreless innings to earn the win in the NCAA Atlantic Regional against Charleston. He gave up just one hit while striking out 11.
He finished this season 7-6 with one save in 75 1⁄3 innings, allowed 64 hits, walked 20 and had an earned run average of 3.35.
The 11 strikeouts against Charleston gave him a school single-season record of 109.
DellaValle left his mark on the Seton Hill career record book. His 2.43 ERA is best in Seton Hill history. He finished second all time in strikeouts with 253 and is seventh in career wins with 21.
