Derry Area’s Micky Phillippi celebrates after beating Boiling Springs’ Cole Wetzel, 6-2, in their 138-pound bout at the PIAA Class AA individual championships Saturday, March 12, 2016, at Giant Center in Hershey.

Derry graduate Micky Phillippi, a three-time state wrestling champion, will transfer to Pitt, the school announced Saturday.

Phillippi spent his freshman season at Virginia, where he competed in open tournaments as a 133-pounder and went 22-7. He will sit out this winter because of NCAA transfer rules and has three years of eligibility remaining.

“Micky is a great addition to our program,” Pitt coach Keith Gavin said in a news release. “He is another local guy coming back home, and we couldn't be happier to have a student-athlete with his talent, work ethic and character joining our team.”

Phillippi was ranked as high as No. 2 in the country at 138 pounds by FloWrestling as a senior.

“There's no place like home, so I'm really excited to join the Pitt wrestling family,” Phillippi said in a release. “The coaching staff are amazing people, and I know that they will help me through the process of coming back. I can't wait to compete in the Field House because it will truly be a home match.”
