It hasn’t taken Micky Phillippi long to make noise for the Pitt wrestling team.

The 2017 Derry grad, a redshirt freshman, was named ACC Co-Wrestler of the Week on Tuesday.

Phillippi shared the honor with Virginia Tech’s Mekhi Lewis.

The Derry native earned a runner-up finish at 133 pounds at the 2018 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational that included wins over friend and rival Luke Pletcher (Latrobe) of Ohio State. He transferred to Pitt from Virginia.

Phillippi entered the weekend seeded sixth and ranked 13 th by InterMat.

He began the round of 32 with a 16-6 major decision over Cal Poly’s Yoshito Funakoshi. He then faced No. 19 Cam Sykora of North Dakota State, a two-time NCAA qualifier, in the round of 16 where he won in a 6-2 decision.

In the quarterfinals, Phillippi defeated 2017 NCAA finalist and two-time All-American and No. 3 Ethan Lizak of Minnesota 4-0. In the semifinals, he outlasted Pletcher, 3-1. Pletcher, a returning All-American and two-time NCAA qualifier, was the No. 2 seed in the weight class and ranked fifth by InterMat.

In the championship finals, Phillippi faced the No. 1 seed and third-ranked Nick Suriano of Rutgers and fell 11-3.

Phillippi is now 6-1 on the year with four wins over ranked opponents.
