Amateur Rahm finishes with 70 at Oakmont

It's not a surprise that Spain's Jon Rahm, the only amateur to make the cut at the 116th U.S. Open, played well at Oakmont Country Club this week.

Rahm finished the tournament at 7-over par.

Rahm recently set numerous 54-hole lows at Arizona State. To close his senior season, he won the NCAA Division I Championship. He also ranks second to Phil Mickelson with career collegiate tournament wins. Mickelson had 16, and Rahm finished with 11. Rahm got to 3-under through six holes Sunday after birdies on Nos. 2, 3, 5 and 6. He started his round by bogeying No. 1.

He settled for a par 70 after rounds of 76, 69 and 72.

“It was a great feeling to just make the cut and top it off with shooting just 2-over for the weekend,” Rahm said. “After six holes, I was really feeling it. I was hitting the ball great, but Oakmont — you can't get too cocky, because it's going to get you. I made a couple bogeys down the stretch.

“I would say the length played to my advantage because I was hitting the driver pretty good this week. I'm not used to playing those greens with this speed and this kind of undulation and this high of rough next to the green.”

Rahm received a gold medal for his low amateur finish.

He will turn pro before next week's Quicken Loans National.
