High school roundup for Jan. 26, 2019: Penn Hills boys edge Serra Catholic

Class 5A Penn Hills held off a late charge from Class 2A No. 2 Serra Catholic to win 72-66 at the Shootout at Seton Hill on Saturday.

Wes Kropp scored a game-high 26 points, Tyree Spencer added 18 and Eddie Daniels had 13 for the Indians (15-3), who regained the lead for good with about two minutes remaining.

Serra Catholic (13-3) had four players score in double figures: Khalil Smith with 21, Jimmy Moon fouled out with 20, Bernard Lawson had 11, and Jayden Bristol chipped in 10. Moon added 12 rebounds and seven assists.

Blackhawk 65, North Hills 61 — Despite Jordan Albright’s 32 points, North Hills (5-12) fell to Blackhawk (7-10) at the PBC Hall of Fame Classic at Moon. Ryan Heckathorn scored 20 points to lead Blackhawk.

Cornell 81, Eden Christian 50 — Isaiah Langston scored 29 points and added 15 rebounds while Kaden DiVito scored 27 points, including hitting five 3-pointers, as Cornell (16-2, 9-1) defeated Eden Christian (8-8, 5-5) in Section 1-A. Zaier Harrison added 18 points for the Raiders, which led at halftime, 41-18. Thomas Medure tallied 13 points in the loss.

Freeport 78, South Park 65 — Garret Schaffhauser scored 22 points to lead Freeport (8-7) to a nonsection win against South Park (7-10). Vinnie Clark added 18 points for Freeport while Jalen Brown scored 14 points. Aidan Rongaus led South Park with 24 points while Santino Tutich added 19 points.

Norwin 58, Gateway 49 — Gianni Rizzo scored 14 points as Norwin (8-8) won a nonsection matchup at Gateway (3-12). Owen Sabol added 12 points for Norwin while teammate Jayden Walker chipped in 11 points. R.J. Stevenson scored a game-high 16 points for Gateway.

OLSH 65, Seton LaSalle 57 — At the PBC Hall of Fame Classic at Montour, Daren DiMichele had 18 points, and Austin Wigley added 16 as OLSH (16-1) earned a victory.

Shenango 73, Ellwood City 47 — In nonsection play, Reis Watkins scored 24 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead Shenango (8-10) to the win against Ellwood City (6-11). Colin McQuiston added 15 points and seven rebounds while Gavin Pagley had 15 points and 12 rebounds. Steve Anotono scored 15 points in the loss.

South Side Beaver 56, Monessen 50 — Jake McDougal scored 26 points to lead South Side Beaver (13-5) to the win against Monessen (10-7) at the PBC Hall of Fame Classic at Moon. Logan English added 17 points for South Side Beaver while Darnel Howell scored 17 points for Monessen.

Waynesburg 57, Fort Cherry 44 — Lucas Garber scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Waynesburg (9-9) to the nonsection win against Fort Cherry (4-13). Chris King added 13 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and three blocks for Waynesburg while Zach Vincenti’s 13 points paced Fort Cherry.

Girls basketball

Carlynton 54, Brashear 31 — Angelicah Diallo scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Carlynton (14-2) beat Brashear (4-11) at the Joey Fabus Memorial Classic at Bethel Park. Carlynton’s defense held Brashear scoreless in the first quarter on way to taking a 21-13 halftime lead.

North Catholic 70, Upper St. Clair 44 — Kylee Lewandowski scored 18 points and Tess Myers added 14 points as North Catholic (15-1) defeated Upper St. Clair (8-9) at the Joey Fabus Memorial Classic at Bethel Park. Dani Short added 11 points and eight rebounds for North Catholic, which out-rebounded Upper St. Clair, 26-12.
