Hot-shooting Ambridge tops No. 1 Quaker Valley, moves closer to Section 2-4A title
Ambridge’s Aaron Hilzendeger scored 30 points including a pair of 3-pointers as the third-ranked Bridgers used a red-hot shooting night to defeat No. 1 Quaker Valley, 75-65, on Friday night.
Eric Chambers added 12 points on four 3-pointers as Ambridge went 10 for 22 from the arc in its home gym.
The victory sets up a Saturday night showdown between Ambridge (14-7, 9-2) and New Castle (15-4, 9-2) for the Section 2-4A title. The second-ranked Red Hurricanes visit Ambridge at 7:30 p.m.
Ryan Stowers scored 17 points and Danny Conlan had 15 for Quaker Valley (18-3, 9-3), which could have clinched the section title itself with a win Friday night. Adou Thiero added 13 points.
Ambridge defeated Quaker Valley in double overtime the first time the teams met in January. For awhile the rematch was just as close and the teams tied 12-12 after the first quarter.
The Bridgers held a slim 33-27 halftime lead after Hilzendeger and Omarri Flannigan made consecutive 3s in the final 78 seconds.
But with nine points from Hilzendeger and a handful of offensive rebounds, Ambridge pulled away in the third — outscoring Quaker Valley, 21-13, in the quarter.
The Bridgers entered the fourth leading 54-40.
