The Pirates announced Thursday they received left-handed pitcher Jake Brentz and right-handed pitcher Pedro Vasquez from Seattle as the players to be named to complete the Aug. 6 trade sending pitcher Arquimedes Caminero to the Mariners.

Brentz, 21, appeared with Short-Season Single-A Everett, Single-A Clinton and Triple-A Tacoma this season, posting a record of 4-2 with a 5.32 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 20 games.

Vasquez, 20, made appearances with the Arizona League Mariners and Clinton this season, posting a record of 5-4 with a 2.26 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 13 games (12 starts).

Walker talks about surgery decision

Mets second baseman Neil Walker will miss the rest of the season because of surgery for a herniated disk in his back, the latest in a series of severe injuries to strike the defending NL champions this year.

The surgery decision first was reported Wednesday night, and Walker spoke about it Thursday before the wild-card contenders played Miami.

“It just wasn't getting better,” he said.

Had he continued to play, he estimated he would have been at “60 percent.” Or, as New York manager Terry Collins said Walker told him, “Not sure I can help.”

“Walk gave it his best effort,” Collins said, later adding, “Neil's played absolutely great.”

No one thing caused him the trouble, Walker said. Instead, the cause was the “culmination of the wear and tear of baseball.”

“I've played through this for four years,” he said.

The switch-hitter and Pine-Richland grad, who turns 31 this month, said the success rate for his type of surgery is “very high” and that the recovery period is three months.

Trout walks away from crash

Angels outfielder Mike Trout was involved in a traffic collision Wednesday evening in Orange County, Calif., but was not injured, according to his agent.

The crash involved three vehicles and occurred about 9 p.m. Pacific Time along the southbound 55 Freeway. One person suffered injuries in the crash and was taken to the hospital. The person's condition was not known, according to a California Highway Patrol dispatcher.

Craig Landis, Trout's agent, confirmed to the Los Angeles Times that Trout was not injured in the crash. The general manager of the Angels, Billy Eppler, said he spoke with Trout via telephone and that Trout would join the team in Seattle for the Friday game against the Mariners.

Minor league trio hit with suspensions

Boston minor league outfielder Chad Hardy and two minor league free agents have been suspended for drug violations, the commissioner's office announced.

Hardy received a 60-game suspension without pay after testing positive for Tamoxifen, a performance-enhancing substance.

Free-agent pitchers Julio Lugo and Adolfi Telleria were suspended for 72 games without pay after testing positive for Stanozolol.
