Leechburg getting track
Leechburg High School has started a track and field club, and the plan is to have athletes compete in individual meets in the indoor and outdoor seasons.
The school board approved the club this week at no cost to the district. The school has not applied to the WPIAL for team membership.
The club will be overseen by athletic director Mark Jones and football coach Mark George. Since the district is without a track, the club will explore partnerships with other districts to use their facilities. Ford City is one of them.
The district business office will create a student activity account for fundraising.
Valley coach resigns
Valley girls soccer coach John Macura resigned after five seasons, citing personal reasons. Macura took over a program that hadn’t won in three years. In consecutive seasons under his leadership, the Vikings broke a 96-game losing streak and a 75-game section losing streak. Macura finished with a record of 11-72-2.
“Being that the girls are on the way up and have a couple good years in them, I’d rather just step down now knowing that I didn’t just walk out on them because they weren’t doing well,” Macura said.
