District 31 Legion roundup: Latrobe rallies in 7th to defeat rival Unity
Latrobe scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat rival Unity, 3-2, in Game 1 of the opening round of the District 31 American Legion playoffs Tuesday at Legion Keener Park.
Tyler Roble and Jared Kollar had RBI singles in the final inning.
Roble had two RBIs and two hits for second-seeded Latrobe (16-5-2).
Unity (10-13), the No. 7 seed, got three hits from Doug Cengia, and Kenny Stas had two hits.
Ryan Shawley scattered eight hits and struck out four to earn the victory.
“It wasn’t pretty, but we got it done,” Latrobe manager Jason Bush said. “Unity gave us a gut shot.”
Hunter Mills opened the seventh for Latrobe with an infield single. Jonathan Kolling then reached on a sacrifice bunt and throwing error.
Roble singled home Mills. One out later, Kollar singled home Kolling.
Game 2 is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Whitney Field.
Hempfield East 8, Kiski Valley 5 — Cole Reese’s bases-clearing double highlighted a seven-run fifth inning that propelled No. 4 Hempfield East (15-7-1) to victory in the opening game of the best-of-three District 31 American Legion first round at Hempfield High School.
Mitch Golden had three hits, including a double, and drove in a run, while Branson Aukerman hit a two-run double.
Derek Jones doubled in a run for No. 5 Kiski Valley (14-7-2), which led 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth.
Murrysville 11, Yough 0 — Justin Johnson tossed a five-hit shutout, and shortstop William Constantin had two doubles in an eight-run second inning to lead top-seeded Murrysville (23-0) to an opening-round victory in the District 31 playoffs.
It was Murrysville’s 12th shutout of the season. Murrysville has allowed 21 runs in 23 games.
Bryce Halleck and Ryan Grieco each had three hits as Murrysville pounded out 16 hits off four Yough pitchers. One of Grieco’s hits was a double.
Anthony Falce had three RBIs, and Ben Ramey and John Bondi each had two hits.
Dylan O’Rourke doubled for No. 8 Yough (8-14-1).
Irwin 14, West Hempfield 3 — A District 31 playoffs opening-round game between No. 6 Irwin (13-8-1) and No. 3 West Hempfield (15-7) was suspended in the top of the seventh inning because of a severe thunderstorm.
The game will be completed at 5 p.m. Wednesday prior to Game 2 at Lint Field.
