Ian Bangor takes West Penn Mid-Am title
Ian Bangor overcame intense heat and a talented field to win the 33rd Western Pennsylvania Golf Association Mid-Amateur title Tuesday at South Hills Country Club.
Bangor, a Sewickley Academy and Carnegie Mellon graduate, followed a 70 with a final-round 66 for a 6-under total and a two-shot win over Erik Bertrand and Drew Deimel.
Bangor made four birdies on his closing nine and seven for the round to seal the win. He did not make a single birdie on the back nine in the first round.
Bertrand, of Chartiers Country Club, and Deimel, of The Kahkwa Club, shot matching 69s in each round to tie at 4-under.
David Brown, Jim Ellis and Tyler Cozad tied for fourth at minus-3. Cozad closed with a 67.
First-round leader Michael Gielarowski, who opened with a course-record 65 and a three-shot lead, was 10 shots worse in round two and finished seventh.
Nathan Smith tied for eight at even par and Sean Knapp, fresh off a runner-up at the U.S. Senior Amateur, tied for 30th at 8-over.
