Local baseball roundup: Leechburg wins District 26 Tournament of Champions Majors title
The Leechburg Lugnuts won the 57th District 26 Tournament of Champions Majors title with an 11-0 victory over the Apollo Cubs on Monday night in Apollo.
Devin Salsgiver pitched a two-hitter to record the shutout in the five-inning game.
Matt Curfman had two singles and a sacrifice fly for Leechburg. Owen McDermott also had two singles for Leechburg.
For Apollo, Marty Mehring doubled and Jake Mull singled.
Beech Creek 12, Kiski Valley 1 — Kiski Valley had a five-game winning streak end and fell into the loser’s bracket of the Pennsylvania Region 7 Tournament at Bedford High School.
Kiski Valley (25-7-1) will play Bedford at noon Tuesday.
Beech Creek is the Central Penn champion.
“We’ve been here before, and we have won four straight elimination games,” Kiski Valley coach David Montgomery said.
“(Tuesday) we need to make it five and go from there.”
Beech Creek scored eight runs in the fifth inning and added four in the sixth to take a commanding lead.
The Vikings’ run came in the second inning when J.J. Brestensky scored from second on a Frankie Stefko single to put Kiski Valley ahead 1-0.
Kiski Valley’s other hit came on a double by Tyler Alworth in the third inning. Beech Creek outhit the Vikings, 11-2.
Alworth hit a grand slam in Sunday’s win over Claysburg.
Freeport game suspended — The Freeport District 26 All-Stars scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth against Hermitage to force extra innings in its 9- and 10-year-old Pennsylvania Section 2 Tournament opener, but the game was suspended because of darkness after eight innings with the score tied 12-12. It will resume in the top of the ninth at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Reynolds.
