When Tom Tanto hired architect Rees Jones to design Totteridge Golf Course in 2000, he envisioned a Salem-based course that would rank second to none in Pennsylvania.

Tanto maintains that vision.

The new ownership group consists of himself, his wife Susan, Dr. Zoltan Cendes and Patrick Cendes. They recently purchased the assets from the group that was running the golf course and residential community managed by Foresight Golf, a club management firm based in San Antonio.

Tanto and other investors from Indiana, Pa., owned the course and property. Tanto gave up his 46 shares of the previous company so he could form the new group.

The company will operate as Totteridge Properties LLC and will concentrate on managing Totteridge Golf Course and developing Totteridge Residential Community. The Cendes were originally from the Pittsburgh; Patrick recently moved back to Greensburg to help develop the Totteridge business.

“I still feel the course is the best in Western Pennsylvania,” said Tanto, who builds courses and installs irrigation systems worldwide.

Tanto wants to restore the course to its original top-notch condition. He has been fixing some of the bunkers and eliminating others.

Totteridge is a 7,370-yard layout that has attracted some of the top golfers in the world. When the course opened, it was private.

It became a public course in 2007.

When Tom Tanto was first discussing the building of the course, he wanted it to be a public course. His investors felt differently.

“We feel this is a new beginning,” Susan Tanto said. “We’re going to concentrate on getting the course fixed up and developing the community.

“Two things hurt us when we originally opened. We opened 10 days before 9/11, and then the housing crisis. One thing the previous ownership failed to do was market Totteridge. That will change.”

The new group already has a home builder interested in constructing 26 units on the property.

“We’re headed on the right path,” Susan Tanto said.

Financial terms were not disclosed at the time. The deal was finalized Friday.
