Dave Antill wins WPGA Senior Amateur at Latrobe Elks GC
Dave Antill had not won a Westmoreland County Golf Association title before Friday.
Now the Harrison City native can scratch that off his bucket list.
Antill shot a 1-under-par 107 at Latrobe Elks Golf Club to claim the Senior Amateur title. He turned 50 in May.
John Jones of Lower Burrell and Jim Bryan of Latrobe tied for second with a 111.
Dave DeNezza and Mike McGuire, both of Greensburg, tied for fourth at 112 in the 27-hole event.
“It's nice to win this event,” Antill said. “It's my opinion that Westmoreland County has the best players at least in Western Pennsylvania if not the state. To win it is pretty special.”
Antill said he won despite not striking the ball like he had in previous events.
“I wouldn't call it lucky that I was 1-under through 18 holes,” Antill said. “I just didn't strike (the ball) it as well as I have been. I did putt really well. There were four or five holes I saved par on, and I took advantage of the par 5s.”
Holding the 1-shot lead and playing with Jones, Antill just tried to play conservatively once he got up a couple of shots.
“I tried not to get into a match play situation,” Antill said. “I tried to stay within myself and just go out and shoot even par or 1-under and if someone beats, so be it. It was nice to keep an eye on Johnny Jones, but once I got two or three up, I played intelligence.”
The Super-Senior winner was Dave Walder, who edged Harry Smith with a better final nine holes. Both finished at 117.
