Frye: List of elk draw winners
If interest in Pennsylvania's elk hunt isn't quite what it was, it's still pretty high.
In the year of the first modern-day hunt, in 2001, more than 50,000 entered the license drawing. About 20,000 do now.
Those who draw a tag find out quickly. The Pennsylvania Game Commission notifies the lucky hunters within 24 hours. Often, outfitters seeking clients reach them sooner.
Hunters can log on to the commission's website and track down the status of their entry, too.
But all that still leaves lots of people wondering. If I didn't get a tag, who did?
I know because many have called and written, asking to see the list of those who will be hunting elk this year.
Here it is, at least in part. Twenty-seven hunters drew tags for a bull, 81 for a cow.
Locals awarded bull elk tags include John Radcliff of Crescent; Justin Forsythe of Imperial and David Condie of Pittsburgh, all in Allegheny County; Robert Baker of Worthington and Blaine Toy of Kittanning, both in Armstrong County; Mark Colt of Ligonier, Westmoreland County; Matthew Steinbach of Zelienople, Butler County; Jonathan Palisin of Hermitage, Mercer County; Keith Akam of Waterford, Erie County; and Raymond Lawrence of Seneca, Venango County.
Others getting bull tags were Michael Weaver of Hanover, Hans Reist of Airville, John Missal of Palmerton, Travis Raab of Hammondsport, N.Y., Thomas Southall of Cornwall, Dean Erney of Telford, Christopher Mumber of Richlandtown, David Bailor of Madera, Leo Stock of Henryville, George Oko of Wilkes-Barre, Mark Wickizer of Dickson City, Llewellyn Kauffman of Red Lion, Tyrel Taughinbaugh of Biglerville, John Trout of Felton, Deborah Hill of Bangor, Brian Keppley of Myerstown and Frederick Kass of Glenside.
Area hunters drawing cow tags were Kerry McClanahan of Chicora and Dale Markle of Slippery Rock, both in Butler County; Thomas Peacock of Trafford, Robert Burtosky of Stahlstown and Dean Zisek of Yukon, all in Westmoreland County; Steven Mishock of Ashville and Harvey Rawlins of Johnstown, both in Cambria County; Harry Pizzingrilli of Allison Park, Edward Shume of Monroeville, and Herman Kumer, Marshall Root and Jack Trzeciak of Pittsburgh, all in Allegheny County; Francis Fisher of Kittanning, Armstrong County; Adam Dumm of Penn Run, Indiana County; John Gould of Aliquippa, Beaver County; Harry Yoder of Windber, Somerset County; and Jason Dooley of Monongahela, Washington County. Also drawing cow tags were Myrle Knickerbocker and Arnold Lippert, both of Cochranton, Crawford County; Gerald Olshevski of North East, David Nagel of Albion and Mona Byerly of Waterford, in Erie County; Jason Pistner, Kenneth Rieder and Joseph Rupprecht, all of St. Marys, Elk County; Richard Larrick of Mercer, Mercer County; Harry Hopkins of Tionesta, Forest County; Fred Geer and James McCart of Sigel, Jefferson County; and Nicholas Melnick of Oil City, Venango County.
Most of the others getting cow tags were from Pennsylvania, though there were also hunters from New York, Ohio and Maryland.
