The Penguins are in the process of cutting ties with prospect Freddie Tiffels.
The speedy 23-year-old German winger was placed on unconditional waivers Friday for the purposes of mutual termination of his contract.
A sixth-round pick in the 2015 draft, Tiffels turned pro last season after spending three years at Western Michigan University. He spent most of his rookie year with the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers, recording 33 points in 44 games. He had three points in 12 AHL games.
He was assigned to Wilkes-Barre in the Penguins’ first round of training-camp cuts on Thursday, indicating that his prospects for quickly moving up the team’s organizational depth chart were not good.
