The Penguins' Kris Letang plays against the Bruins on Jan. 7, 2015, at Consol Energy Center.

If the Penguins earn a playoff spot, it is “not likely” defenseman Kris Letang will play, general manager Jim Rutherford said.

Letang has been out since March 28 because of a concussion that occured after a hit into the boards by Arizona’s Shane Doan.

“Based on his present condition,” Rutherford said, “it’s not likely he’d return this year.”

Letang has missed six games since the concussion. The Penguins are 1-4-1 in those games and have scored 12 goals.
