USA Hockey announced Tuesday that Pittsburgh is among three finalists to host the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championships.

Buffalo and St. Louis are the others. Chicago and Tampa Bay were eliminated from contention.

Site visits will be conducted over the next month, and a final decision is expected within the year.

The event, held in late December and early January, features 10 nations' young and future NHL players. A total of 31 games will be played over 2 1⁄2 weeks.

The last U.S. host for the event was Buffalo in 2011.

“I have no doubt that Pittsburgh will be a great host for the World Juniors,” Penguins captain Sidney Crosby said in a team-issued statement. “Our fans are so passionate about hockey here. They always give our team a ton of support, and I know they will do the same for this event.”
