First-rounder McGuire expected to sign with Pirates on Tuesday
CINCINNATI — Reese McGuire, the Pirates’ second first-round pick in the major league draft, is expected to sign with the club Tuesday.
McGuire’s high school coach, Mark Zender, said McGuire has agreed to terms with the Pirates and was traveling to Pittsburgh on Monday. The prep catcher will sign Tuesday. The Pirates selected McGuire after taking prep outfielder Austin Meadows ninth overall. Meadows remains unsigned.
“I know he and his parents are on an airplane right now, and they should be arriving in Pittsburgh,” Zender said. “Tomorrow he gets his physical, and he signs tomorrow. Then he goes to Florida on Wednesday.”
McGuire, a Kentwood (Wash.) High product, was the draft’s 14th overall pick and is expected to sign for near the slot value of the pick, $2.56 million, according to a source.
McGuire was the top-rated prep catcher in the draft.
Pirates GM Neal Huntington declined comment on McGuire’s status. Upon being drafted. McGuire said his intention was to start his pro career. He had a college commitment to the University of San Diego.
