Saint Vincent’s Alona Sleith named to softball watch list
Saint Vincent softball infielder and pitcher Alona Sleith is expected to have a big sophomore season. But it isn’t just her coaches, teammates and Presidents Athletic Conference opponents who have the ready-made expectations.
Sleith, a Yough graduate, was named Monday to the Schutt Sports and National Fastpitch Coaches Association National Player of the Year Watch List.
That means Sleith is considered one of the top 50 players in the country in Division III softball. Only 10 other sophomores made the list.
Sleith last season was an All-Central Region and All-PAC first-team selection after she hit .416 with 11 home runs, 38 RBIs and 31 runs scored. She was 6-4 as a pitcher and led the Bearcats with 29 strikeouts in 62.2 innings.
She led the conference in average and RBIs.
The Bearcats open the season March 3 at the NTC Tournament in Clermont, Fla. against Adrian College.
