Getting to know: Offensive lineman Jerald Hawkins
Jerald Hawkins
Position: Offensive lineman
Height/weight: 6-foot-6, 305 lbs.
Experience: Rookie
College: LSU
Offensive line coach Mike Munchak wasn't surprised to lose Kelvin Beachum to free agency, and Mike Adams was released, so the Steelers invested a fourth-round draft pick in Hawkins, a versatile lineman who can play guard and tackle. At LSU, he started 25 games at right tackle and 12 at left tackle. Hawkins will need to work on his footwork and technique during training camp, and he has received plenty of help from right tackle Marcus Gilbert.
How do you approach training camp?
I'm approaching this like any other player. Nothing is guaranteed or written in stone. There's a lot of camp left, and I'm trying to earn a spot on the team.
Is there added pressure trying to make a potential championship team?
It's a great blessing to be on a team that has a legitimate chance of making it to the Super Bowl. They came close last year, so that's why there's so much hype and energy around here. It's awesome being around this atmosphere.
How flexible are you on the offensive line?
It doesn't matter to me where I play. I'll fit whatever role I'm given. I'll play any position, tackle to tackle.
