Getting to know: Steelers tight end Paul Lang
Paul Lang
Position: Tight end
Height/weight: 6-foot-5, 260 pounds
Experience: Rookie
College: Michigan State
Lang, a Mt. Lebanon graduate, was signed late in spring to compete for a roster spot. Lang went undrafted out of Michigan State this year after a solid college career; he was a four-year letterman and played in 50 games. Lang is an accomplished blocker in the mold of former Steelers tight end Matt Spaeth, who was released before the start of camp, and the Steelers value a tight end who can be an end-of-the-line blocker.
Ask a kid, did you ever make the trip to St. Vincent College to watch training camp? “Surprisingly, I haven't. This time of the year I usually got busy whether it was my football season starting as a kid or playing baseball, so I never was able to make it up here as a kid. But in middle school, I played in a couple basketball tournaments up here.”
What was it like over the past two months since you were signed by your hometown team? “Everybody is definitely excited, but at the same time while I have dreamed about this, I can't be happy just to be here in camp. I have a goal to make the team, and I am going to do whatever I can to do that.”
Has the loss of Heath Miller and Spaeth and Ladarius Green's injury given you more hope to make the team? “The best way to learn is getting on the field and showing them I know how to play and know the playbook. Right now, I am taking it day-to-day. In this business, you can't look too far ahead because anything can happen.”
